J. Coltrane is a couples and wedding photographer keenly attuned to moments lived not performed. Based between Los Angeles and Sydney, his tailored approach to shooting is highly collaborative. Inflected with a reportage sensibility, his work combines a relaxed methodology with a considered point of view.
With more than eight years of experience photographing weddings across the US, Australia and Europe, J. Coltrane is well versed in the rhythms of the occasion, and recognises the choreography required to record events as they unfold. This appreciation for spontaneity, reflected in his more candid photographs, works in tandem with his portraits, speaking to a distinct understanding of romantic storytelling and the medium’s role in illustrating the big day.
Referencing the ease and visual language of 90s editorials – J. Coltrane shoots both with digital and film formats, leaning toward analogue aesthetics – his work has previously been published by Vogue and Anti-Bride. Today his practice, which in addition to weddings includes engagements, elopements, anniversaries, and couples photography, remains firmly but discretely shaped by early influences such as American fashion campaigns and the French New Wave.
Employing the camera as a tool for celebration – documenting memories that will anchor a partnership – J. Coltrane works both with colour and black and white, indoors, outside, and with the unique characteristics of a couples’ narrative interwoven with the core artistic tenets of his work.
MEET JACK
A trained actor with a focus on somatic practices, Jack originally studied the Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais Method at Victoria College of the Arts. Today the principles of these teachings, which deal with posture, movement and self-awareness, underscore much of the way he guides his clients, creating an environment that centres softness and provides care. Arriving at photography initially via his father’s old film camera, Jack previously travelled across Australia documenting dancers and other actors; these experiences would imbue his later creative practice, shaping the rigour he brings to weddings today. Elsewhere, he has worked in the commercial sphere as a producer, collaborating with clients such as Cadbury, On Running, Linktree, Vodka Cruiser and Intrepid.
TESTIMONIALS
Working with Jack on our pregnancy announcement photos was an absolute pleasure, my husband can get a little shy and feels unphotogenic but Jack was able to get him out of his shell and provided us with photos we will cherish for a lifetime.

Working with Jack was such a good experience. He made everything feel relaxed and easy, and we never felt awkward or posed. It really shows in the photos. We love how natural they feel.

The process is more collaborative than many people expect. I’m not here to impose a fixed artistic vision, but to be guided by your preferences, references, ideas, and tastes.
Throughout, we keep communication open, and I’ll support and advise on everything from location and wardrobe through to timing- making sure the process feels considered, relaxed, and genuinely yours. -
There's a two part creative process.
All wedding bookings include a preceding editorial couples shoot, inspired by 90s fashion brands. This is a considered, stylised session shot under controlled conditions, where we work closely together to define a clear creative direction- from wardrobe and styling through to hair, makeup, and location.
That experience then feeds into the wedding day itself, which I photograph with a photojournalistic approach. The focus shifts to real moments and emotional truth, allowing the day to unfold naturally while capturing it honestly and unobtrusively.
